Hulu Continues to See Robust Subscriber Growth

Hulu added over 8 million subscribers in 2018

Streaming service Hulu expanded its already huge content library last year. Hulu now has over 25 million subscribers, annual growth of 47%. It had 17 million subscribers at the end of 2017.

The TV streaming provider now has more subscribers than Comcast (CMCSA), America’s biggest traditional pay-TV provider. Note that Comcast is one of the partial owners of Hulu.

Hulu does not break out how many customers have chosen SVOD-only (subscription video on demand) plans and how many have chosen bundled SVOD and live TV packages.

Disney’s acquisition of Fox could affect Hulu

An interesting data point Hulu has also divulged is that it generated $1.5 billion in ad revenue, a 45% increase, as of the end of 2018. However, like Netflix (NFLX), Hulu continues to spend billions on content and technology, meaning that it’s still not profitable.

Hulu’s ownership could decide its future. The Walt Disney Company (DIS), which has a 30% stake in Hulu, is slated to complete its takeover 21st Century Fox’s (FOX) assets, including its 30% stake in Hulu, in the near future. As a result of the takeover, Disney will own 60% of Hulu.

Disney will be launching its own streaming service this year. How it will go about handling both Hulu and its streaming service remains to be seen.
