Weaker earnings could impact institutional holdings in Q3

In Q2, energy sector companies reported lackluster results. While Chevron and Shell’s earnings missed Wall Street analysts’ estimates, ExxonMobil and BP surpassed them. Plus, these companies’ profits fell due to lower upstream realizations and weaker downstream margins. However, a few of these companies had higher upstream output, which supported their total earnings.

While energy sector firms Chevron, Shell, and BP’s profits fell across their business segments, ExxonMobil’s earnings rose in its Upstream segment. So, institutions could make changes in their holdings based on their assessment of these companies’ second-quarter earnings.
