TikTok added 188 million users in Q1

Facebook (FB) continues to see user base growth. However, most of its growth is coming from the developing world, where it is beginning to face stiff competition from Chinese sensation TikTok.

According to SensorTower, the social media company recorded its best-ever quarter. SensorTower estimates that TikTok added 188 million users during the first quarter alone, growing 70% YoY. According to SensorTower’s estimates, TikTok made $18.9 million globally through in-app purchases in the first quarter, growing 222% YoY. The growth was driven by India, which has fallen in love with the app. The report said that TikTok had 88 million new users in the country.

TikTok was the most downloaded app on iOS worldwide in Q1

According to SensorTower, TikTok was the most downloaded app worldwide during the first quarter in the iOS App Store and clocked its fifth consecutive quarter in the number one spot. Meanwhile, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Facebook occupied the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth spots, respectively.

Unlike Facebook, TikTok is primarily a video sharing platform that is gaining popularity, especially in India and China. That said, Facebook is still preferred by most advertisers given its massive reach. TikTok is still a long long way from catching Facebook’s nearly 2.4 billion monthly active users. That said, it is something Facebook needs to keep an eye on.
