Is Wozniak Concerned about Apple Falling Behind?

Samsung (SSNLF) and Huawei have already unveiled their foldable smartphones. Xiaomi and Vivo are about to follow suit. Apple (AAPL) is trying to catch up in the foldable smartphone space.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Steve Wozniak, Apple’s founder, was questioned about what the iPhone maker needs to do next after falling behind in the new technology.

Wozniak said that Apple has been the leader in several smartphone features including Touch ID, face recognition, and mobile payments.

Wozniak said that “not being the leader” in the foldable technology concerns him because he really wants a folding phone. However, Apple could be a dark horse. Wozniak said that “Apple always has surprises.” He said that Apple is “always working on things in the background.”

5G technology

Apple’s co-founder is bullish on Apple’s future. The company is working on several other businesses outside the iPhone.

The iPhone is in danger of falling behind Samsung and Huawei in foldable technology and in upgrading its 5G technology.

While Samsung has already unveiled its 5G smartphone, Apple will likely have the technology in 2020. However, there will be a period of time before carriers successfully roll out 5G across the US.

Foldable phones are expensive. As a result, foldable phone adoption, especially in 2019, might not take off, according to Canalys.
