Indians are asking Alexa five cricket-related questions a minute
Amazon (AMZN) has been pushing to make Alexa ubiquitous in India as well. Smart speaker Echo and its variants have been well received in the country. However, Alexa had to be equipped with special skill sets to cater to the country’s unique interests.
According to a report by Business Insider, Alexa has struck a chord with the cricket lovers in India. The report says that viewers from the cricket-loving nation have been asking Alexa five cricket-related questions a minute.
Amazon has been developing cricket-related skills on Alexa for Indian users
According to the report, Amazon India has been working with some IPL (Indian Premier League) teams to develop Alexa’s IPL-related skills, allowing users to listen to podcast interviews and ask Alexa for player facts. The IPL’s 12th season began on March 23.
The report also says that Alexa is now capable of answering complex questions like “Alexa, what’s the projected score?” or “Alexa, how many sixes did Virat Kohli hit?”
The IPL is considered to be the best cricket league in the world and boasts lucrative paychecks. Total viewership rose from 606 million in the tenth IPL season in 2017 to an astounding 717.4 million in the 11th season in 2018, according to Broadcast Audience Research Council via Business Standard.
However, India’s new stringent e-commerce laws are expected to dent Amazon’s India operations. Amazon has invested billions in its India operations.
