Why Tech Companies Are Excited about 5G

Tech companies demonstrated 5G’s potential at CES 2019

One of the next big leaps in technology that everyone is waiting for is 5G. Tech companies are beginning to declare ambitious plans for life in the 5G world.

At CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2019, which just concluded in Las Vegas, Nevada, a number of tech companies, including Verizon, Samsung, and chip makers Intel and Qualcomm, gave demonstrations to emphasize the potential of 5G speeds.

The next generation of Internet speeds could potentially make streaming videos, for example, at least ten times faster than 4G.

Smartphone vendors now have to work on upgrading their hardware technologies, such as chips, for the next generation of Internet speeds. Apple, for example, is expected to have 5G technology in its iPhones by 2020.

Telecommunications companies may get a boost with 5G

The implementation of 5G could still take some time. However, telecommunications giants Verizon (VZ), AT&T (T), and Sprint are aiming to launch 5G smartphones as early as this year.

Verizon, the biggest carrier in the United States, started offering fixed 5G home broadband in October 2018. At CES 2019, the carrier shed light on how 5G could change technology by demonstrating how augmented reality could help surgeries be more precise.

Stagnating growth has beleaguered telecommunications stocks over the last few years. However, 5G technology is expected to breathe new life into these companies, which are currently facing stiff competition.
