The medical cannabis market in western countries has gained significant traction, and countries in the East are also beginning to open up to medical cannabis. On December 25, Thailand became the first Southeast Asian country to legalize medical cannabis. Thailand also legalized kratom, which also has mind-altering properties.

The world is opening up

Thailand will allow marijuana strictly for medicinal use in certain proportions as prescribed by a physician to a patient. There will be strict regulations on manufacturing and sale in the country.

The above map shows that momentum towards legalizing marijuana in Southeast Asian regions has been almost dormant. However, with the legalization of cannabis for medical use in Thailand, we may see more openness in neighboring countries, especially if it is grounded in economic benefits to a nation.

Canadian cannabis companies such as Canopy Growth (WEED), Tilray (TLRY), Aurora Cannabis (ACB), and Hexo (HEXO) have been frontrunners in the medical cannabis domain (HMMJ).
