How will technology change the future?
In 2017 and 2018, the semiconductor industry worked on 5G (fifth generation) and autonomous driving technologies. The industry has been exploring major areas where AI (artificial intelligence) can make a difference. In 2018, NVIDIA (NVDA) and Intel (INTC) started exploring AI applications in healthcare and industrial robotics.
NVIDIA is looking to bring deep learning to medical imaging such as X-rays, CT, PET, ultrasound, and MRI to help diagnose conditions like prostate cancer or breast cancer faster and more accurately. NVIDIA is also looking to use AI in other modalities including pathology and chemistry. In the long term, it aims to bring deep learning in genomics, drug discovery, and medical records in order to personalize medicine.
NVIDIA’s vice president of healthcare, Kimberly Powell, stated that the company’s experience in automotive would also help it in healthcare. Both industries are old and highly regulated because they affect people’s lives so closely. So, they have high safety standards, complex business models, and lengthy change management procedures. Even Intel is working with healthcare companies to speed up medical diagnosis.
NVIDIA and Intel are also exploring their strengths in robotics, especially in industries where work is dangerous. NVIDIA will use its autonomous vehicle strategy in robotics. It will create a simulation environment to train machines and deploy trained robots in relevant industries such as manufacturing, construction, inspection logistics, delivery, agriculture, and service. Robots can be used to perform dangerous tasks in oil and gas as well as search and rescue, or critical tasks like elder support.
The above technologies are still in the development stage and could change the way healthcare and industrial markets work in the long term. The increasing adoption of AI presents a multiyear growth opportunity for the semiconductor industry.
