Waymo’s Autonomous Cars Just Hit 10 Million Miles on Public Roads

Waymo just hit another milestone

Waymo, Alphabet’s (GOOGL) self-driving unit, has been testing its fleet of autonomous vehicles on public roads for the past few years. The company has recently doubled down on those efforts.

Waymo announced on Wednesday, October 10, that its fleet of self-driving vehicles has driven a whopping 10 million miles on public roads in the United States. Waymo has completed 6 million miles in 11 months and 2 million miles in three months.

Waymo is ramping up its testing pace

The above graph shows that Waymo’s pace is picking up as it gets set to launch a ride-hailing service with its autonomous vehicles.

The development of self-driving cars is still in its early stage and could face government safety regulations in the future. Waymo is considered the leader in the segment but is facing huge competition.

Alphabet said it will reach 7 billion miles of simulated driving by the end of October. Waymo is part of Alphabet’s Other Bets segment, which, although it’s growing rapidly, is still a negligible portion of the company’s total revenue. But that could change if Waymo’s ride-hailing venture is successful.
