MPC, VLO, and PSX: Institutional Activity of the Top Holders

Variations in institutional ownership in refining stocks

Institutional ownership in Marathon Petroleum (MPC), Valero Energy (VLO), and Phillips 66 (PSX) stands above 65.0%. MPC has the highest institutional ownership of ~86.0%. PSX has the lowest institutional ownership of ~69.0%. Valero’s institutional ownership is ~82.0%.

Institutional ownership in MPC

The institutions with the highest holdings in Marathon Petroleum (MPC) are The Vanguard Group, State Street Global Advisors, BlackRock Institutional Trust Company, and J.P. Morgan Asset Management. In the second quarter, only J.P. Morgan raised its holdings in the stock. The other institutions decreased their holdings in Marathon Petroleum.

In the last six months, PointState Capital has bought ~5.4 million MPC shares. However, T. Rowe Price Associates has sold ~6.2 million MPC shares during this timeframe. 

Institutional ownership in VLO

The institutions with the highest ownership in Valero (VLO) are The Vanguard Group, BlackRock Institutional Trust Company, State Street Global Advisors, and Fidelity Management and Research Company. In the second quarter, only Fidelity Management and Research Company increased its holdings in VLO. The other three institutions reduced their holdings in VLO in the second quarter.

In the last six months, Fidelity Management and Research Company has been the largest buyer of Valero stock. However, Goldman Sachs Asset Management has been the largest seller of Valero stock during this period.

Institutional ownership in PSX

The institutions with the highest ownership in Phillips 66 are The Vanguard Group, Berkshire Hathaway, State Street Global Advisors, and BlackRock Institutional Trust Company. In the second quarter, only BlackRock increased its holdings in PSX. The remaining institutions reduced their holdings in Phillips 66 stock in the second quarter.

In the last six months, T. Rowe Price Associates has bought ~4.6 million PSX shares, but Berkshire Hathaway has sold ~12.5 million PSX shares.
