Fertilizer Prices and Stocks Are on Pause: What’s Going On?

Agribusiness ETF sinks

Last week, which ended September 7, the VanEck Vectors Agribusiness ETF (MOO) fell ~1.8%, while the broader market S&P 500 Index fell ~1%. Overall, fertilizer stocks also took a beating.

Fertilizer stocks

Last week, all of the six major fertilizer stocks in the above chart suffered. CVR Partners (UAN) was at the bottom, falling 5.9% to $3.66. Israel Chemicals (ICL), which has been one of the top performers, fell 5.5% to $5.60.

Mosaic (MOS) lost 4.3% last week followed by Nutrien (NTR), which fell 3.2% to $54.80. CF Industries (CF) declined 2%, while Intrepid Potash (IPI) fell 2.4%. On Monday, September 10, most of these stocks were in the green.

YTD performance

YTD (year-to-date), most of these fertilizer stocks are in positive territory despite last week’s decline. Israel Chemicals has risen 36% YTD, followed by CF Industries that has risen 18%. Mosaic has risen 12% YTD, followed by CVR Partners that has risen 3.4%. Nutrien is almost flat YTD, while Intrepid Potash has fallen YTD.
