Another version of Spectacles?
Snapchat parent Snap (SNAP) might take another shot at the wearables space. The company’s first attempt, Spectacles, which cost $129, could take ten-second clips that could then be posted to the customers’ Snapchat accounts and made viewable to friends.
The company’s FCC filing suggests that Snap might be launching another version of Spectacles, referring to as “Wearable video camera, 002.” The company wrote off $40 million last year after it accumulated a massive inventory of unsold Spectacles.
Spectacles revenue represents a small portion of Snap’s total revenue
In 4Q17, the company generated total revenue of $285.7 million, with ad revenue of $281 million. The social media company’s non-ad revenue primarily comes from Spectacles shipments.
The company made $4.7 million from Spectacles sales in 4Q17, slightly higher than the $4 million it made from Spectacles in 3Q17. The sales probably rose due to increased demand during the holiday season.
In March, Cheddar reported that Snap could launch two versions of Spectacles, with one priced at $300 and featuring two cameras and a GPS.
