PPL’s Total Returns versus Peers

Total returns

PPL Corporation (PPL) stock has returned -21% in the last year. The underperformance was largely due to its stock falling in the last few months. In the last year, PPL stock has lost more than 25%, while the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLU), which tracks the S&P 500 Utilities Index, fell almost 3%.

Total returns for XLU in the last year came in around 0.5%. In the last five years, it returned more than 9%, compounded annually. We considered dividends paid and stock appreciation in a particular period while calculating total returns.

Peer Xcel Energy (XEL) returned 4% in the last year. It returned 12%, compounded annually, in the last five years.

Broader markets returned approximately 14% in the last year. In the last five years, the returns came in around 13% compounded annually.
