Kinder Morgan: Institutional Investors’ Position Changes

The Vanguard Group, Wellington Management Company, and State Street Global Advisors are the three largest institutional investors in Kinder Morgan (KMI). The three investors hold 6.5%, 4.7%, and 4.4%, respectively, of Kinder Morgan’s outstanding shares. Notably, Richard Kinder holds nearly 11% of Kinder Morgan’s outstanding shares. Collectively, the top ten investors own nearly 37% of Kinder Morgan’s outstanding shares, which is ~1% higher than the percentage held by the top ten investors at the end of 3Q17.

The Vanguard Group added net 1.9 million Kinder Morgan shares, according to a filing dated December 31, 2017. State Street Global Advisors added 1.5 million Kinder Morgan shares. A net addition of nearly 10 million shares by Commonwealth Bank of Australia was the largest position change among the top ten holders. Wellington Management Company added 7.3 million shares. Now, Wellington Management Company is the third-largest institutional investor in Kinder Morgan.

Institutional ownership in Kinder Morgan

Institutions hold nearly 64.3% of Kinder Morgan’s outstanding shares. As the above chart shows, Richard Kinder holds nearly 11%, while Fayez Sarofim owns 1.3% of Kinder Morgan’s outstanding shares.
