How Fertilizer Prices Moved in Week Ending February 16

Last week, the VanEck Vectors Agribusiness ETF (MOO) rose 2.9% during the week as did the broader market S&P 500 Index (SPY).

Fertilizer stocks

Last week, five out of seven fertilizer stocks in the above chart ended the week in positive territory. Of these five stocks, CVR Partners (UAN) emerged as the top gainer with a 6.7% rise through last week to close at $3.18 per share. CF Industries (CF), which released its earnings last week, rose ~5% to close at $40.4 per share. Intrepid Potash (IPI) rose 3.2% to $3.6 followed by Israel Chemicals (ICL), which rose 3% through the week to close at $4.1 per share. Mosaic (MOS) also rose 0.87% last week to close at $25.4 per share. Nutrien (NTR) fell 2.5% to $44.4 per share followed by Terra Nitrogen (TNH), which fell 1.8%. Let’s look at how these stocks have performed so far this year.

YTD performance

YTD (year-to-date), Israel Chemicals has emerged as the top gainer with a rise of 10.6%, followed by Mosaic, which is up 3.6%. Terra Nitrogen is also in positive territory with a gain of 2.8% YTD, while CF Industries is down 2.3%. Nutrien has fallen 1.4% YTD, and Intrepid Potash emerged as the top loser with its stock falling by ~10.1%. On the other hand, CVR Partners had flat returns. MOO is up 5.8% compared to the S&P 500, which is up 6.6%.
