Institutional Ownership in Refining Stocks: MPC, ANDV, VLO, and PSX

Variations in institutional ownership in refining stocks

Institutional ownership in Marathon Petroleum (MPC), Andeavor (ANDV), Valero Energy (VLO), and Phillips 66 (PSX) rose in December 2017 over June 2017. Institutional ownership in MPC and VLO rose 2.1% and 1.8%, respectively, over June 2017 to 83.7% and 84.4%, respectively, in December 2017.

PSX saw a rise in its institutional ownership by 1.5% over June 2017 to 72.5% in December 2017. However, institutional ownership in ANDV rose steeply by 12.2% over June 2017 to 81.6% in December 2017.

This rise in institutional ownership in ANDV is due to an abrupt fall in its institutional ownership after the acquisition of Western Refining in May 2017.

Institutional ownership in MPC

Institutions with the highest holdings in Marathon Petroleum include The Vanguard Group, BlackRock Institutional Trust Company, State Street Global Advisors, and Wellington Management Company.

On an average and analyzing data for the past six months, BlackRock Institutional Trust Company and Wellington Management Company have increased their total holdings in MPC. The remaining two institutions have decreased their total holdings in Marathon Petroleum in the past six months.

Soroban Capital Partners has sold the highest numbers of MPC shares in the past six months. D.E. Shaw and Co. has acquired the largest numbers of MPC shares in the past six months.

Institutional ownership in ANDV

Institutions with the highest holdings in Andeavor include The Vanguard Group, State Street Global Advisors, Boston Partners, and BlackRock Institutional Trust Company. On an average and analyzing data from the past six months, The Vanguard Group, State Street Global Advisors, and Boston Partners have reduced their total holdings in Andeavor. However, BlackRock Institutional Trust Company has increased its holdings in the company.

Hound Partners and Slate Path Capital have sold the highest numbers of ANDV shares in the past six months. T. Rowe Price Associates and Quantitative Management Associates have acquired the largest number of ANDV shares in the past six months.

Institutional ownership in VLO

Institutions with highest ownerships in VLO include The Vanguard Group, BlackRock Institutional Trust Company, State Street Global Advisors, and Columbia Threadneedle Investments. In the past six months, The Vanguard Group and Blackrock Institutional Trust Company increased their holdings in VLO. However, the other two firms decreased their holdings in the stock.

Wellington Management Company has been the highest seller of VLO shares in the past six months. Fidelity Management and Research Company has been the largest buyer of VLO shares in the past six months.

Institutional ownership in PSX

Institutions with higher holdings in Phillips 66 include Berkshire Hathaway, The Vanguard Group, State Street Global Advisors, and BlackRock Institutional Trust Company. On an average and analyzing data from the last six months, only Berkshire Hathaway’s holdings have remained unchanged in PSX. The remaining institutions have lowered their total holdings in Phillips 66 in the past six months.

OppenheimerFunds is the highest seller of PSX stock in the past six months. The second-highest seller in place is New England Asset Management. However, Fidelity Management and Research Company and AJO are the two largest buyers of Phillips 66 stock in the past six months.
