Let’s take a look at American Electric Power’s (AEP) total returns. In the last year, American Electric Power returned (including dividends) 21%—compared to broader utilities’ (XLU) average returns of ~11%. During the same period, the SPDR S&P 500 (SPX-INDEX) (SPY) returned 22%.

Total returns consider capital appreciation and dividends paid in a particular period.

It should be noted that American Electric Power’s returns beat its peers (IDU) in all of the time horizons considered above. In the last five years, American Electric Power’s absolute total returns were ~108%, while its peers’ returns were 71%. Broader markets returned 108% during the same period. American Electric Power’s dividends contributed to its total returns.
