Will the Apple Watch Series 3 Attract Buyers?

Apple (AAPL) launched the Apple Watch Series 3 on September 12. The device has built-in cellular capability, allowing users to stay connected, make calls, and receive texts without an iPhone around while working out or doing other physical activities. Other features include water resistance up to 50 meters and a barometric altimeter. The Apple Watch Series 3 has two models, one with GPS and cellular capabilities and one with only GPS.

Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, stated, “We believe the addition of cellular will transform the way people use Apple Watch, providing a new sense of freedom since they can stay connected with or without their iPhone. Apple Watch Series 3 combined with the power of watchOS 4 is the ultimate device for a healthy life.”

Customers will apparently have access to 40 million songs via Apple Music and combined cellular and WatchOS 4 features. The two devices will be available for in-store purchase starting September 22. The Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS and Cellular) has a built in LTE (long-term evolution) and UMTS cellular radio that lets users switch to cellular when they’re away from their iPhone, using the same number.


The Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS and Cellular) is available for $399, whereas the Apple Watch Series 3 (only GPS) is available from $329. Further, the company is now selling the Apple Watch Series 1 for $249 in the United States (SPY).

Apple’s Tim Cook recently mentioned on Apple’s earnings call that Apple Watches saw 50% growth in unit sales on a year-over-year basis. Apple is one of the major players in the wearable space, competing with Samsung (SSNLF), Fitbit (FIT), Garmin (GRMN), and Xiaomi.
