Understanding Short Interest Trends in Chesapeake Stock

Short interest ratio (short interest as a percentage of float) in Chesapeake Energy (CHK) stock on September 6, 2017, was ~22.0%. In comparison, short interest ratio in the stock in January was ~11.6%.

As the graph above shows, Chesapeake Energy stock has fallen significantly since the start of this year, while the short interest ratio in the stock has risen dramatically. CHK stock and the short interest ratio have mostly moved in opposite directions this year.

Chesapeake stock was trading at $3.76 on September 6, 2017. It was trading at $6.92 on January 3, 2017.

Chesapeake’s peers Cabot Oil & Gas (COG) and EQT (EQT) have short interest ratios of ~3.7% and ~17.5%, respectively.
