Toyota’s US sales in August

In August 2017, Toyota Motor (TM), the largest Japanese automaker, reported a YoY (year-over-year) rise of 6.8% in US sales to 227,625 vehicle units. PIn July, the company’s US sales rose 3.6% YoY to 222,057 vehicles.

August was the third consecutive month that Toyota’s US sales rose on a YoY basis. In 2016, Toyota’s global vehicle sales were in second position after Volkswagen (VLKAY), the European auto giant.

Toyota offers its vehicles in the US market under two key brands: Toyota and Lexus. They include cars, utility vehicles, and trucks.

Solid August truck sales

Toyota’s total US car sales in August were 92,912 vehicle units, a 7.2% fall YoY. On the brighter side, its August US truck sales stood firm at 134,713 units with a significant YoY rise of ~19.2%. For Toyota’s truck sales, August was the best month of 2017 so far.

Toyota’s US truck sales have been rising on a YoY basis for seven consecutive months, which was a positive factor for its profitability.

Toyota’s profit margins are already higher than Ford’s (F), Fiat Chrysler’s (FCAU), and General Motors’ (GM) margins.

YTD US sales

In the first eight months of 2017, Toyota has sold 1.6 million vehicle units in the US market. That’s a YTD (year-to-date) fall of 1.3% from 1.62 million vehicle units sold in the same period last year. On a YTD basis, sales of Toyota’s brand vehicles fell 0.20% YoY, while Lexus’s brand sales fell 8.0%.
