Japanese Automakers’ in China: Comparing August Sales

Toyota’s China sales in August

In August 2017, Toyota Motor (TM), the largest Japanese automaker, reported a YoY (year-over-year) rise of about 13.2% in its China sales, which reached nearly 109,000 vehicle units. In July 2017, Toyota’s Chinese market sales rose 11.4% YoY.

By comparison, Toyota’s US sales stood at ~228,000, which was higher than its Chinese market sales and showed a ~6.8% YoY increase. August was the third-straight month that Toyota’s sales in the US market have risen on a YoY basis.

Notably, Toyota’s 2016 global vehicle sales took second place after the European auto giant Volkswagen (VLKAY), beating US automaker General Motors (GM).

Honda’s China sales in August

Honda Motor (HMC) reported a handsome YoY (year-over-year) increase of ~20.6% in its August China sales volumes. Honda (IYK) sold ~129,000 vehicle units in the Chinese market last month, compared with ~146,000 units sold in the US market during the same month. In July, Honda’s China sales had risen 11.6% YoY.

Honda’s higher August China sales can be attributed primarily to continued higher demand for trucks and SUVs (sports utility vehicles). So far in 2017, Honda sales in China have been much higher than Toyota’s sales in China.
