AT&T on 5G
The 5G space has been a major focal point for AT&T (T). With the help of future 5G technology, AT&T anticipates a tremendous boost in its data speeds. Additionally, the company also expects that 5G technology could enhance the capacity and latency of the existing 4G LTE path. The company will integrate spectrum into larger blocks and tap the benefits of the new antenna technology.
During AT&T’s recent 2Q17 earnings conference call, AT&T’s management stated that the carrier will aggressively push 5G deployment in more than 20 markets by the end of the year. The company is testing DIRECTV Now over fixed 5G wireless in Austin and Indianapolis. Plus, the management mentioned that field trials are performing well, achieving speeds of 750 Mbps.
AT&T is an aggressive player in the 5G market
AT&T has been an aggressive player in the 5G space. By outbidding its rivals in the past, AT&T had attempted to procure a spectrum advantage. During the AWS-3 spectrum auction, which was held in early 2015, AT&T was the highest bidder and purchased spectrum worth $18.2 billion. During the same event, Verizon (VZ) purchased spectrum worth $10.4 billion, while T-Mobile (TMUS) purchased spectrum worth $1.8 billion, as the above graph shows.
