Utilization rates among big US refiners

Refiners’ throughput and utilization rates indicate the quantity of oil and other feedstock processed as a percentage of total refining capacity. Tesoro (TSO) achieved a 92% refinery utilization rate in 1Q17—the highest among the select group of four US refiners that we’re analyzing in this series: Phillips 66 (PSX), Marathon Petroleum (MPC), Tesoro (TSO), and Valero Energy (VLO).

By comparison, MPC and PSX had lower utilization rates of 83% and 84%, respectively, in 1Q17, while VLO’s refinery utilization rate stood at 91%.
