Here’s What May Drive Western Digital’s Client Solutions Revenue

Western Digital’s (WDC) Client Solutions segment includes the company’s branded storage products sold through retail channels. These products include flash products, USB (universal serial bus), and mobile data cards.

In fiscal 2Q17, Client Solutions generated revenue of $1.1 billion, compared to $976.0 million in fiscal 2Q16 and $459.0 million in fiscal 2Q15. It rose 10.0% quarter-over-quarter driven by robust demand during the holiday season and demand for NAND (negative AND) products.

In fiscal 2Q17, Western Digital launched the 4.0 TB (terabyte) My Passport and 8.0 TB My Book hard drive for PC (personal computer) users. It also announced a new 4.0 TB hard drive for Apple’s (AAPL) MacBook.

Steve Milligan, WDC’s CEO (chief executive officer), said, “We experienced robust holiday seasonal demand and achieved sequential revenue growth driven by key NAND based products.”

Market opportunity of $8.0 billion

WDC expects the total available market for its Client Solutions business to rise from $7.0 billion in 2016 to $8.0 billion in 2020. Social media is a key driver that will increase demand for storage devices in smartphones.

As you can see in the above graph, WDC expects consumer storage demand to increase exponentially. Social media platforms such as Facebook (FB), Twitter (TWTR), and YouTube (GOOG) have a huge user base.
