Which Utility Delivered the Highest Total Returns This Year?

Although utilities’ total returns were dominated mostly by stock appreciation this year, stable and increasing dividends were also an important factor. The Utilities Select Sector SPDR (XLU) returned 12% in the past year. It outperformed broader markets (SPY). Xcel Energy (XEL) returned 13% during the same period.

In comparison, Duke Energy (DUK) returned 8%, while PPL Corporation (PPL) delivered total returns of 1% in the past year.

Total returns consider the dividends and stock appreciation in a specific period.
