SO, DUK, and XEL: Analyzing the Total Returns of Top US Utilities

Though the total returns of US utilities have mostly been dominated by stock appreciation in 2016, stable and increasing dividends have also been important.

The Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLU) has returned 12% in the last year, outperforming the broader market (SPY). Southern Company (SO) has returned 5% in the same period.

By comparison, Duke Energy (DUK) has returned 8% in the last year. We’ve considered stocks’ total dividends and stock rises during the period to calculate their total returns.
