How Is Hewlett-Packard’s Printer Segment Looking in Fiscal 4Q16?



Hewlett-Packard leads the printer market

According to research company IDC (International Data Corporation), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) led the worldwide large format printer market with a share of 42% in 2Q16, compared to 41.5% in 2Q15. The other leaders in this market include Canon (CAJ), Japan’s (EWJ) Epson, Roland, and Mimaki, with shares of 20.5%, 17.5%, 3.2%, and 2.8%, respectively.

Unit shipments for HPQ rose 8% YoY (year-over-year) in 2Q16.

Revenue fell 14% YoY in fiscal 3Q16

Hewlett-Packard’s Printing segment reported revenue of $4.4 billion in fiscal 3Q16, a fall of 14% YoY. The segment’s revenue fell 10% YoY on a constant currency basis. Its operating profit was $903 million, or 20.4% of HPQ’s total revenue.

Supplies constituted 64% of the Printing segment’s revenue, whereas commercial hardware and consumer hardware accounted for 29% and 7% of the segment’s revenue, respectively.

Revenue from HPQ’s Supplies subsegment fell 18% YoY, or 13% YoY on a constant currency basis, in fiscal 3Q16. Its total hardware units fell 10%, its commercial hardware units fell 2%, and its consumer hardware units fell 14% YoY in fiscal 3Q16. Hewlett-Packard expects its supplies subsegment’s revenue trajectory to stabilize by 2017.
