What Do Frac Sand Volumes for EMES and HCLP Indicate?

As discussed in the previous parts of the series, the rise in energy commodity prices and US rig counts positively affected frac sand volumes in the second half of 2016. In the third quarter of 2016, the frac sand volumes of Hi-Crush Partners (HCLP), Emerge Energy Services (EMES), Fairmount Santrol Holdings (FMSA), and US Silica Holdings (SLCA) rose compared to the previous quarter.

As the above graph shows, HCLP’s volumes rose 28% in 3Q16 over 2Q16, which is double the 14% increase in the average US total rig count during the quarter.
