Institutional holdings in integrated energy stocks

Integrated energy stocks like ExxonMobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX), Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A), and BP (BP) have varied institutional holdings that range from 14%–70%. The level of these holdings suggests the confidence level of sophisticated market participants such as institutions have in these stocks.

Chevron’s institutional holdings stand at 70%, higher than its peers ExxonMobil (XOM), BP, and Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A). On the other hand, BP has the lowest holdings, standing at 14%.

Typically, higher institutional holdings indicate a favorable opinion about a stock among these sophisticated investors. XOM and RDS.A’s institutional holdings stand at 55% and 18%, respectively. The iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF (IWD) has an ~13% exposure to energy sector stocks.
