Anadarko’s Short Float Shows Investors Are Bullish on Its Stock

Short interest in Anadarko’s shares

On September 19, 2016, Anadarko Petroleum’s (APC) short interest as a percentage of its float, or its short interest ratio, was 2.1%. On June 30, 2016, it was 2.5%. Since the end of 2Q16, Anadarko’s short interest has fallen ~15%.

Anadarko’s stock price was $57.52 on September 19, 2016, and $53.25 on June 30, 2016. As we can see in the above graph, Anadarko’s stock price and short interest as a percentage of its float have been moving in opposite directions.

Peers Cimarex Energy (XEC), Continental Resources (CLR), and Newfield Exploration (NFX) have short interest ratios of ~2.6%, ~23.5%, and ~4.3%, respectively. All these companies make up 10.5% of the iShares U.S. Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (IEO).
