US regulated utilities’ total returns

US mid-size regulated utilities outperformed their bigger counterparts in the past year. Their rally was much steeper—this boosted total returns. Xcel Energy (XEL) returned 25%, while its large-cap peers Southern Company (SO) and Duke Energy (DUK) returned 21% and 16%, respectively. PPL Corporation’s (PPL) total returns during the same period were 15%.

The Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLU) returned 15% in the past year. Total returns consider the capital gains as well as dividends paid during the specific period.
