Dish’s Sling TV on Apple TV
Dish Network’s (DISH) Sling TV will be available on Apple (AAPL) TV. According to a June 2016 report by Verge, Apple announced at the WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) that Dish’s Sling TV service will be available on Apple TV through the Sling TV app (application).
The company has also added 12 Viacom (VIAB) channels to its Sling TV service after renewing its carriage agreement with the company in April 2016. Dish has also started offering a multistream version of Sling TV priced at $20 per month.
During Dish’s fiscal 1Q16 earnings call, management was asked how Sling TV planned to face this rising competition. The company stated that considering the low barriers to entry in the OTT industry, it expects competition to increase. Dish doesn’t believe that exclusive content will be a differentiating factor in this industry.
Management also stated that in the OTT industry, advertising is superior to advertising on a linear television network. As a result, it believes that its Sling TV could add more value for its programming partners and advertisers.
Rising trend of online television service
As indicated by the rising popularity of streaming services such as Netflix (NFLX), viewers are watching more content online. According to a Digitalsmiths 4Q15 video trend report and as the above graph shows, Netflix leads the OTT market with a 48% share, followed by Amazon (AMZN) with 20%.
