Why Facebook’s Messenger Is a Long-Term Growth Driver

Facebook Messenger was the fastest-growing app of 2015

Homegrown Facebook (FB) Messenger is an instant messaging application that enables people to connect, and also enables businesses to engage with customers seamlessly and securely. During 1Q16, Facebook stated that Messenger has 900 million monthly active users.

As per Nielsen (NLSN), Messenger’s strong growth in user base made it the fastest growing app of 2015. Facebook’s Messenger recorded the highest YoY change in average unique users. Facebook topped the chart as the number one smartphone app while Google’s (GOOG) YouTube remained in the second position.

Facebook is expanding the reach of Messenger

Facebook keeps on enhancing its Messenger app so that it has another platform to show display ads to users. Last year, Facebook launched the web version of its Messenger app, allowing users to chat independently of Facebook’s main site. The company also added the video calling feature, which allows users to make video calls between an Apple (AAPL) iPhone and a Google Android-based phone. This is unlike Apple’s FaceTime feature, as it only works on Apple devices.

Moreover, Facebook integrated its Messenger app with Spotify to allow users to share songs with their friends directly inside the app. The integration doesn’t allow users to play music using the Messenger app. Instead, users can search songs or tap shared links to open the Spotify app to play songs.

Facebook constitutes 5.9% of the Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT).
