Reading GONIX’s upside moving average trend

The top five holdings of the Gotham Neutral Fund Institutional Class (GONIX) are Sanderson Farms (SAFM), Electronic Arts (EA), Pilgrim’s Pride (PPC), Hormel Foods (HRL), and Gilead Sciences (GILD) as of the end of December 2015. These companies make up approximately 5.7% of the fund’s net assets.

We should note that the fund’s stock selection methodology is based on the market value of the fund. A detailed study of the fund’s investment method is given in this series. As of January 13, 2016, Sanderson Farms, Pilgrim’s Pride, and Hormel Foods were trading above their respective 20-day and 100-day moving averages, as can be seen in the table below.

More key moving averages in GONIX’s holdings

The table above shows the moving averages, forward target prices, and returns of top five holdings of GONIX. As the table shows, Electronic Arts (EA) and Gilead Sciences were trading at 4.9% and 6.5% below their respective 100-day moving averages. Meanwhile, Sanderson Farms, Pilgrim’s Pride, and Hormel Foods are trading at 12.1%, 14.6% and 15.6% above their respective 100-day moving averages in the S&P 500 index (VFINX).

Analyst estimates for the top holdings of GONIX

According to a Bloomberg survey, the one-year price estimates indicate an upside for three of the top five holdings of GONIX. Notably, Gilead Science (GILD) is expected to have an upside of 30%, the highest among the five top holdings. Also, Electronic Arts and Pilgrim’s Pride have yearly upside targets of 27.7% and 2.1%, respectively.

By comparison, the forward EPS (earning per share) estimates of Sanderson Farms (SAFM), Electronic Arts (EA), Pilgrim’s Pride (PPC), Hormel Foods (HRL), and Gilead Sciences (GILD) were $0.6, $1.81, $0.44, $0.72, and $2.98, respectively, during the same period.
