Apple’s PC segment market share rises to 7.2% in 2015
According to market research company Gartner, Apple (AAPL) was the fifth-largest manufacturer in the PC (personal computer) segment at the end of 2015.
In 2015, Apple shipped 21,000 Mac units, representing 7.2% of the global market share, compared to 20,000 units in 2014 at 6.2% of the market share. Mac shipments rose 5.8% YoY (year-over-year) for Apple in 2015.
China’s (PGJ) Lenovo (LNVGY) was the leading manufacturer in 2015 with 57.1 million units, followed by Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) at 52.6 million units, Dell at 39.2 million units, and Asus at 21.2 million units.
Apple was the only PC manufacturer to see YoY growth in its PC shipments. Shipments for Lenovo, HP, Dell, Asus, and Acer fell by 3.1%, 4.4%, 3.3%, 6.5%, and 15.3%, respectively, in 2015.
Apple’s shipments rise 2.2% YoY in 4Q15
According to Gartner, Apple shipped 5.7 million units representing 7.5% of the global market share in 4Q15, compared to 5.5 million units in 4Q14 at 6.7% of the market share. Shipments rose 2.8% YoY for Apple in 4Q15.
Apple was the only PC manufacturer to see YoY growth in its PC shipments during 4Q15 as well. Shipments for Lenovo, HP, Dell, Asus, and Acer fell by 4.2%, 8.1%, 5.1%, 3.2%, and 11.2%, respectively, in 2015.
“The fourth quarter of 2015 marked the fifth consecutive quarter of worldwide PC shipment decline,” said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. “Holiday sales did not boost the overall PC shipments, hinting at changes to consumers’ PC purchase behavior.”
Apple was the third-largest manufacturer in the United States in 4Q15, with 2.2 million units shipped. It made up 12.8% of the total PC market. HP and Dell led the PC market in the United States at 4.6 million and 4.1 million units shipped, respectively. While Apple’s shipments rose 6.5% YoY, shipments fell for HP and Dell by 8.4% and 1.5%, respectively.
