Activision’s latest initiatives

On November 10, 2015, The Wall Street Journal reported that Activision Blizzard (ATVI) will create a new film and television unit. Activision will collaborate with film studios of companies like The Walt Disney Company (DIS) for theatrical distribution of its movies. The company has also not ruled out the possibility of launching an OTT (over-the-top) service for the streaming of its content in the future.

The first production of the new unit will be a television production of Activision’s popular video game franchise Skylanders. Activision stated in early 2015 that, since its launch in 2011, the franchise has earned $3 billion revenues globally.

Earlier in November 2015, Activision acquired King Digital Entertainment for $5.9 billion. (You can check out How Will King Digital Acquisition Benefit Activision? in another Market Realist series.)

In October 2015, Activision announced a new division for competitive video games or e-sports.

Activision’s rationale

Activision intends to monetize its vast intellectual property which includes popular video game franchises like Call of Duty, Warcraft, and Skylanders. Activision’s digital channels primarily drove its growth in fiscal 3Q15. Activision Blizzard’s console franchise Call of Duty and its PC franchise World of Warcraft were two of the top five highest-grossing mobile games, according to the company’s 3Q15 earnings release.

Activision Blizzard (ATVI) makes up 0.5% of the PowerShares QQQ Trust, Series 1 ETF (QQQ). The same ETF also holds 12.41% of Apple (AAPL) and 8.04% of Microsoft (MSFT).
