IYW Sees -$1.65 Billion in Fund Outflows in Trailing 12 Months

Overview of IYW

The iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) tracks a market-cap-weighted portfolio of US technology companies. This ETF tracks the performance of 137 publicly listed companies in the technology sector. IYW’s market capitalization is $2.41 billion with an expense ratio of 0.45% and average daily volume of shares traded at $26.24 million. IYW’s price-to-earnings ratio is 17.89x. Its price-to-boook and distribution yield are 4.01x and 0.91%, respectively.

IYW’s top five holdings include Apple (AAPL) at 19.59%, Microsoft (MSFT) at 10.87%, Facebook Class A Shares (FB) at 5.69%, Google Class A (GOOGL) at 5.46%, and Google Class C (GOOG) at 5.20%. These companies comprise more than 45% of the total portfolio.

Fund flows in IYW

In the trailing one month, IYW’s fund outflows were $90.77 million. In the trailing 12-month (or TTM) period, IYW’s net fund outflows were $1.65 billion. Fund flows in the trailing one week and trailing three months were -$24.98 million and -$511.31 million, respectively.

Since June 26, 2015, IYW is trading consistently below its moving averages. Since then, IYW’s net fund outflows have been in excess of $500 million.

IYW generated investor returns of -0.56% in the trailing 12-month period and 5.85% in the trailing one-month period. In comparison, it generated 10.42% in returns in the trailing three-year period, -3.35% year-to-date, and -7.26% in the last three months. We can see that as the ETF generates negative returns, fund outflows increase.
