Solar power systems
SunPower’s (SPWR) solar power systems category provides design and development of rooftop and ground mounted solar systems for residential, commercial, and large scale solar power plants. Under residential systems, the company leases solar systems to homeowners, as we discussed in Part 2.
In 2014, the company developed a new product line—InvisiMount. It can be mounted directly on the roof. It does away with additional components. The company also offers roof and ground mounted systems for commercial establishments. These include rooftop, parking lot, and open space applications.
Utility and power plant systems
As we discussed earlier, SunPower’s utility scale power plant systems category has been the driving factor for the growth in the top line over last few quarters. The company differentiates itself from its peers by selling a modular 1.5 MW (megawatt) solar panel block called “Oasis.” Since the block is pre-assembled, it saves time during the installation process. Currently, more than 1,000 Oasis systems are installed worldwide. This takes the total installations to over 1.5 GW (gigawatts).
Construction and maintenance
The company undertakes construction contracts for utility scale solar power plants. SunPower also offers operation and maintenance of operational solar power plants. Under “Smart Energy” solutions, the company provides efficiency enhancing solutions with the help of technology. SunPower competes with other peers (TAN) like First Solar (FSLR), SunEdison (SUNE), and Canadian Solar (CSIQ) in this space. Lastly, under the residential leasing program, SunPower provides solar systems to US households in collaboration with third-party financiers.
