Salesforce.com targets business intelligence market

Entry into business intelligence space

Through its Wave platform, Salesforce.com (CRM) provides clients with predictive analytics features by integrating its own customer relationship cloud offering. This newest cloud platform makes it easier for anyone to explore data, uncover new insights, and take action instantly from any device.

Wave is Salesforce.com’s sixth cloud platform for business users. The platform could be the company’s ticket into the business intelligence (or BI) market.

SAP leads business intelligence space

As the chart above shows, SAP AG (SAP) dominated the BI and analytics market with a 21.3% market share in 2013. SAP earned $3.1 billion in revenues that year. In second place was Oracle (ORCL), which held a 13.9% market share last year. IBM (IBM) and Microsoft (MSFT) were among the top five players in the BI market based on their reported revenues. According to Gartner, the BI and analytics software market grew by 8% in 2013 as compared to 2012, making it a $14.4-billion market.

Wave to use company’s network in BI market

Salesforce.com has built an extensive network due to its Sales and Service Clouds. The company plans to employ that data on the Wave platform to unveil new insights that could benefit its customers.

Wave allows companies to deploy sales, service, and marketing analytics or build custom mobile analytics apps using any data source. Salesforce offers two subscription types for Wave:

  • “builder,” which allows users to create and manage data sets
  • “explorer,” which lets users view and share data insights and dashboards
