Stock appreciation has accounted for a major chunk of water utilities’ returns in 2016, as compared to dividends paid by utility companies during the same period. Remember, total returns consider a stock’s gains as well as dividends paid during a particular period.

As you can see in the chart above, California Water Service Group (CWT) and American Water Works (AWK) returned 42% and 30%, respectively, in the past year, outperforming broader markets by a huge margin.

By comparison, Aqua America (WTR) and American States Water (AWR) have returned 5% and -3%, respectively, in the past year.
