Apple Watch shipments grew 22% YoY in 2018
The Apple Watch has been an incredibly popular consumer device. The advanced health features in the Apple Watch Series 4 have given it an advantage over the other smartwatches out there.
According to the latest report by research house Counterpoint, Apple’s (AAPL) total watch shipments climbed by 22% YoY (year-over-year) in 2018, giving it a market share of 37%. Counterpoint expects Apple to maintain a 36% market share in the smartwatch sector this year.
The Apple Watch Series 4 was a “star performer” and the best-selling smartwatch model of the year, according to Counterpoint. It estimated that Apple sold 11.5 million units of the Series 4 during the year. Apple launched the smartwatch in September with its new iPhones.
Why the Apple Watch has been so popular
Global smartwatch shipments have continued to grow at a fast clip. According to Counterpoint, global smartwatch shipments grew 41% YoY in 2018.
Apart from its advanced health features, the Apple Watch also offers a lot to the user, including access to a good number of apps and a good-looking watch. The company is self-reliant on the operating system of the watch, which gives it an advantage over competing smartwatch vendors.
Unfortunately for Apple, the Wearables, Home, and Accessories segment, a fast-growing segment of the company’s revenue that includes sales from its Apple Watches, still makes up only 8.8% of the company’s total revenue. But that percentage has been increasing.
