Apple has been granted a patent for a foldable phone
Apple (AAPL) appeared to be falling behind Samsung (SSNLF) and Huawei in the race to producing a foldable smartphone. However, the foldable smartphone Samsung launched in March had major technical problems that have delayed its launch.
Apple has won a patent for a foldable screen that could be used on its iPhone. The iPhone maker has applied for a series of foldable smartphone patents, including patents for features such as hinges.
However, these patent applications may not be approved and do not mean Apple is ready to launch a foldable phone immediately. Realistically, Apple may need a year or two to start selling foldable iPhones.
Apple’s iPhone shipments have fallen
Apple’s iPhone unit sales have been dire, impacting the company’s overall revenue. According to Canalys, Apple’s shipments during the March quarter fell a whopping 23.2% year-over-year to 40.2 million units.
Apple’s iPhone sales could continue to fall until there is a big leap in 5G-compatible or foldable phones. Apple stock has fallen ~15% in May as investors fear that US-China trade tensions could seriously affect the iPhone maker.
