Spotify Is Making Many Changes to Accommodate Podcasts

Spotify is launching a redesign of “Your Library”

Spotify (SPOT) is serious about podcasts. Earlier this week, it launched a new playlist in the US dubbed “Your Weekly Drive,” which features a mix of music and news podcasts. Now, the music streaming giant is launching its revamped experience, shifting the focus to podcasts. Spotify announced that it is rolling out a new edition of the “Your Library” section in its app to subscribers of its premium app.

With the new redesign, premium subscribers will only need to swipe or tap to switch between its music tab and the podcast tab. The new design shifts focus away from video content.

Why the podcast push is prudent

The redesign also includes an update to the music tab, which has made it easier to get access to music that users want. The app is now much easier to navigate, which could help retain subscribers, who weren’t finding the app very user-friendly.

The company’s shift to podcasts comes at it is aiming to improve its margins, which have been squeezed so far by the music labels who wield huge bargaining power on Spotify. The music streaming company will have much more control over acquiring podcasts. Podcasts will also allow the company to gain radio ad money in its app through targeting.
