Mathis’ career in music started at the age of 19 after he was discovered in an impromptu jam session by Helen Noga. Noga at the time owned multiple nightclubs, and she started managing Mathis. They booked multiple gigs, which boosted his fan following which he signed a record deal with Columbia Records.

His first LP album was released in 1956 followed by his first record album "Johnny Mathis: A New Sound in Popular Song." He then recorded his two most popular songs, "Wonderful! Wonderful!" and "It's Not for Me to Say."



 

In 1957, he released "Chances Are," which became his second single to sell a million copies, and in the same year, he released "Wild is the Wind," which featured in the film of the same name. It was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song.



 

His album, "Johnny's Greatest Hits" topped the Billboard for three weeks, spent 490 consecutive weeks and nine and a half years on the Billboard Top 200 album chart setting the record for the most number of weeks on the Billboard 200 albums in the US at the time.

In 1958, Mathis made his film appearance singing the song "A Certain Smile" in the film of the same title earning another Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.



 

He then released his two biggest hits "Gina" and "What Will Mary Say” in 1962 and 1963, respectively. In 1964, he established Jon Mat Records and continued making music. In the late '70s, his song "When a Child is Born" became the Christmas No. 1 single in the UK.

He recorded a duet with Deniece Williams called "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late," which was No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 pop chart and was certified gold and silver in the US and the UK in 1978. He then went on to release several duets with partners including Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, and more.



 

Mathis has the longest tenure of any recording artist on the Columbia label. He has released 200 singles, sold 350 million copies, and had 71 songs charted around the world. He also had 12 TV specials and 300 television guest appearances on various shows. Mathis continues to perform live and still travels with his full orchestra.

As per Wealthy Gorilla, Mathis earns about $150 million per year from his live performances across the globe. He is further estimated to have made $200 million from record sales.

Mathis did not disclose his relationships for decades. In 2017, he confirmed to the US Magazine that he is gay, CBS reported. He also said that over the years he has had both girlfriends and boyfriends but he never married.
