From his popularity as a politician in the 90s to his notoriety fueled by corruption allegedly exposed by the Panama Papers leak, former Pakistani Prime Minister and political bigwig Nawaz Sharif has amassed a massive net worth of $1.6 billion. His battles to survive in the corridors of power in Pakistan's volatile political atmosphere have earned him the reputation of the "Lion of the Punjab." Sharif's political journey includes three non-consecutive terms as Prime Minister of Pakistan over a period of nine years. Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan after a four-year self-imposed exile in the UK, aiming for a political comeback ahead of the delayed January 2024 elections. The 73-year-old leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) kicked off his journey by inheriting his family's steel, sugar, and textiles conglomerate, before entering politics to quickly rise up the ranks and become the Chief Minister of Punjab in the 80s. Being close to former dictator Zia Ul Haq, he became the Pakistani Prime Minister in the next five years, and was first ousted and forced to flee the country by another dictator Pervez Musharraf following the Kargil War. Sharif returned to Pakistan after years in exile in Saudi Arabia, following the ouster of Musharraf after a pro-democracy movement. While he lost to the Pakistan People's Party in the first election of the new democracy, he won the following polls, but was again ousted when his name appeared in the notorious Panama Papers.
