He played a troubled teenager escaping an abusive home in Every Mother's Nightmare's "House of Pain," He was involved in the founding A Red Orchid Theatre in Chicago and worked with theaters like Steppenwolf and Northlight. Shannon played Peter Evans in "Bug" in 1996 and reprised it in the 2006 film adaptation, both written by Tracy Letts, a fellow Steppenwolf ensemble member.

In 1993, Shannon made his film debut in "Groundhog Day" as a wedding groom. He continued with various film roles, including "Jesus' Son," "Pearl Harbor," "8 Mile," "Vanilla Sky," "Kangaroo Jack," "Bad Boys II," and "Grand Theft Parsons," where he portrayed hippie Larry Oster-Berg.
