Top Energy Gainers Last Week

On May 4–11, upstream stock Carrizo Oil & Gas (CRZO) was the top gainer on our list of energy stocks. During this period, the SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (XOP) rose 4.2%—the largest gainer among the major energy subsector ETFs that we discussed in the previous part of this series.

On May 7, Carrizo Oil & Gas reported its 1Q18 earnings. The company reported an adjusted net income of $0.48 per diluted share—compared to analysts’ estimated income of $0.33 per share.

We made our list of energy stocks from the following energy subsector ETFs and a few integrated energy stocks.

  • the SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (XOP)
  • the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE)
  • the Alerian MLP ETF (AMLP)
  • the VanEck Vectors Oil Services ETF (OIH)
  • the VanEck Vectors Oil Refiners ETF (CRAK)

Other top gainers

On May 4–11, Petrobras (PBR) was the second-largest energy gainer.

Last week, upstream stocks Gulfport Energy (GPOR) and Sanchez Energy (SN) were the third and fourth-largest gainers on our list of energy gainers.

On May 8, Gulfport Energy reported its 1Q18 earnings. The company reported an adjusted net income of $0.56 per diluted share—compared to analysts’ estimated income of $0.41 per share.

Last week, Ensco (ESV) was the fifth-largest gainer on our list of energy stocks. During this period, the VanEck Vectors Oil Services ETF (OIH) rose 3.1%—the second-largest gainer after XOP among major energy subsector ETFs.

Energy commodities and the broader market

On May 4–11, US crude oil June futures rose 1.4%, while natural gas June futures rose 3.5%. The S&P 500 Index (SPY) rose 2.4% during this period. So, the top five energy gainers outperformed energy commodities and the equity market during this period.
