A Look at Apple’s MacBook Performance in 2017



Revenues rose 25% YoY in fiscal 4Q17

As seen in the chart below, Apple’s (AAPL) revenues from its MacBook segment rose 25.0% YoY (year-over-year) to $7.2 billion in fiscal 4Q17 (or 3Q17) compared to revenues of $5.7 billion in fiscal 4Q16.

Units shipments rose 10% YoY to 5.4 million units in 4Q17 compared to 4.9 million units in 4Q16. This trend indicates a 13% YoY increase in average selling price (or ASP), which rose from $1,174.00 to $1,331.00. Apple’s MacBook revenues in fiscal 3Q17 (or 2Q17) rose 7.0% YoY to $5.6 billion.

Market share of 7.3% at the end of 3Q17

Market research firm IDC has estimated Apple’s market share to be 7.3% in the PC segment. However, this share was estimated when IDC projected Apple shipments of 4.9 million units in 3Q17. As Apple shipped more than 5.4 million units in 3Q17, this indicates a share of ~8.0% in the global PC market.

Top manufacturers HP Inc. (HPQ), Lenovo (LNVGY), Dell, and ASUS had market shares of 22.8%, 21.6%, 16.1%, and 6.2%, respectively, at the end of 3Q17. The global PC market was still in a state of decline in 2017 as shipments fell 0.5% YoY to 67.2 million units. PC manufacturers HP and Apple were easily able to beat global PC growth in 2017.
