Mosaic (MOS), Potash Corporation (POT), Agrium (AGU), and Israel Chemicals (ICL) are some of the largest producers of phosphate fertilizers such as DAP/MAP (diammonium phosphate/monoammonium phosphate).
In this part, we’ll look at how they did in terms of shipments for their phosphate segment for the recent quarter ended March 2016.
Israel Chemicals, which shipped 0.5 million metric tons during the recent quarter, saw the largest jump in shipment growth—20% year-over-year. However, the companies management stated that the growing supply from Morocco and China remain a concern. The management stated that phosphates exports from China over the last two years have “more than tripled.”
Mosaic had the largest shipment volume during the quarter ended March 2016 at 2.2 million metric tons. However, year-over-year shipments fell by 4% from ~2.3 million metric tons.
PotashCorp was next in terms of shipment volumes at 0.72 million metric tons. However, PotashCorp experienced a 10% growth in shipments during the same period from 0.65 million metric tons.
On the other hand, Agrium shipped about 0.2 million metric ton of phosphate fertilizer (wholesale), but it saw the largest decline at 22% year-over-year. You may access some of the above companies through the SPDR S&P North American Natural Resource ETF (NANR), which invests about 13% of its portfolio in the agricultural chemicals sector.
In the next part, we will look at the average realized prices for the above phosphate producers during 1Q16 to help further dig into this segment shipment for the above companies.
