Hewlett-Packard and the Global PC Market
Shipments in 3Q17 rose YoY
According to market research firm IDC (International Data Corporation), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) ended 2Q17 with a market share of 22.8% in the PC (personal computer) segment. Its unit shipments rose 6.2% YoY (year-over-year) from 13.0 million in 2Q16 to 13.8 million in 2Q17. However, the overall shipments in the PC market fell 3.3% YoY in 2Q17 to 60.5 million units, from 62.6 million units in 2Q16. IDC had forecast a fall of 3.9% in PC shipments during the quarter ended June 30, 2017.

The other top players in the PC market include Lenovo (LNVGY), Dell, Apple (AAPL), and ASUS. Lenovo and ASUS saw shipment declines of 5.7% and 8.6%, respectively, in 2Q17. PC shipments for Dell and Apple have risen 3.7% and 1.7%, respectively, in 2Q17.
According to IDC research manager Jay Chou, “Amid some unevenness in market trends across the regions, the global PC market has continued to trend toward stabilization. Despite recent issues wrought by component shortages and its effect on system prices, we expect the momentum of commercial market replacements will contribute to eventual market growth.”
Personal System revenue rose in fiscal 2Q17
Hewlett-Packard’s Personal Systems segment reported revenue of $7.7 billion in fiscal 2Q17, a rise of 10.0% YoY. It rose 10.0% YoY in fiscal 1Q17 as well.
